We went here for dinner and it was a huge disappointment. The hostess wasn't friendly but I gave her the benefit of the doubt because sometimes people have bad days. When we ordered our appetizer came out and shortly after my sons Mac an cheese came out. We sat there for 45 minutes after my son got his meal before our meals came out. We got pasta and pizza and they were both very bland. When we got home, my fiancée and I both got sick. The only good thing about this place is the bread. Food=poor service=poor experience=poor.

Tried to have lunch here today while out shopping. Waited almost ten minutes in the lobby to be seated and even searched the bar for an employee. Two waitresses helping their tables looked us over a few times but no one was interested in seating us. We left, won't be back.

We went here because my cousin wanted some Italian food. As we walked in we were greeted right away. They weren't as busy either, it was a Monday. We took about half an hour to order. The waitress was nice gave us few more minutes cause we couldn't decide. Finally we ordered. At the same time the food took forever to come out even our free bread and garlic oil dip. I must say I was a little disappointed because I'm a hungry pregnant woman. We all decided on the family dinner. Original price was $29.95. I think. since it was a Monday it was half off. We ordered lasagna. Again we waited. Finally the food came out. what we thought was it was was a big plate but instead it was 3 pieces of lasagna, decent size. It did not taste good as it looks. It was bland. Tasted as if it came out of a frozen package and remicrowaved. Our appetizer came out. I believe we ordered bread with some sort of dip. It was good but not great, again it tasted bland. I ordered Chicken Alfredo to go for my boyfriend. I didn't get to try it but my sister in law did and she said it was okay. She told me it didn't have flavor and I glanced at it to put it away and there wasn't enough sauce for the noodles. Yet there were big pieces of chicken meat. I wished there were more flavor in their food.

The service was pretty good and the chopped salad I ordered (which was a bit like an Italian cobb salad) was really delicious, my experience eating at Johnny Carino's as a person with gluten intolerance was disappointing. While most major Italian restaurants have an option for gluten-free pasta, this one does not. Unless you want a salad, you'll be out of luck as a gluten-free diner. Until they bring some more options in, I will opt for another restaurant in the future.

I really only like going to this restaurant for the drive up service. They are quick, and I love taking the skilitini home and enjoying it for a nice movie night with the hubby. The tables inside are a bit sticky, and it seems like every time we go there we get the new server who has the "experienced" server with them. It does get a bit annoying. But the skilitini is worth the drive, not so much worth the sit down service.

The salad my co-worker ordered came with a 1/2 inch LIVE BEETLE crawling around in it. This wouldn't have been such a big deal if she hadn't just begun her vegan diet. She named him Johnny and set him free, maybe he will return home to Carino's kitchen (God speed, little buddy!). They also misinterpreted my order of baby back ribs for a chicken "panini", which I wouldn't have minded that much, but their idea of a panini is breaded chicken drenched in cheese between two pieces of wonderbread white toast, the bottom being soaking wet. To be fair, the veggies I got were decent; and as far as I could tell, beetle free. This order was phoned in.

This place is okay, not great. Definitely a chain. The service is slow and the staff is not well informed. The waitress we had last time didn't even have beer suggestions, she had to ask two other waiters for help. I also asked this same waitress if they have risotto on the menu and she didn't even know what that is. Come on! You work at an Italian restaurant, get with the program. The food is meh, just heated up and put on the table I guess. The calamari was good, the Caesar salad is awful they are definitely cheap with the dressing. Also, the music made me want to pull my hair out the whole time.

I have always loved this place. I've always gotten great service and the food is always delicious. For any of you haters that posted bad reviews, you're probably just picky assholes. I usually go in the middle of the week and about 2-3 in the afternoon so its slow, I get to pick where I want to sit and that way the waitress or waiter isn't rushed or too busy with other tables. Because on a Friday or Saturday at dinner time can be crazy. I usually get the 16 layer lasagna or the tortellini. Its a chain, but there is only one in salt lake. And you also have to remember that we live in Utah, for those of you complaining that they didn't offer a wine or beer list, the majority of our population is MORMON, there is no point in the waiters or waitresses to offer it... Idiots. And for those complaining that the waitresses or waiters don't know about the menu or what the food is made of, did you ever think that the waitress might be new to the restaurant? You've been new to a job before. Cut the lady some slack. If you have serious questions like that and they don't know the answer, ask to speak with a manager that does know the answer. Common sense. Some people and the way they think is ridiculous. Its called customer service and people that complain like that should be hit in the face with a chair and then have tiramisu smashed in their mouth and told to SHUT UP AND EAT IT!! This place is way better than olive garden. And the music that plays in the restaurant is usually 30's or 40's jazz or Italian music. To the lady complaining she wanted to rip her hair out, you're mental and probably have no taste for life, at all.

I am proud to admit that I like Carino's! Yes, I know it's a chain...bla bla bla. I don't love it, but I honestly like it...even if they did remove the best thing they ever had on their menu - Gorgonzola Chicken Pasta. Lucky for me I can now make an even better version of it at home. Half of their menu is fantastic, and the other half ranges from just okay to unpleasant. I still really enjoy their food, and have the benefit of delighting in a good variety of it when our extended family lands here. This is what I/we like to order: - Peach Bellinis (Don't judge, but I have to order several of these, and they tend to make up the majority of my bill - exquisite!) - Baked Stuffed Mushroom appetizer (They use lemon cream in the sauce! It's SO good!) - Fire Sticks appetizer (Sausage, jalapenos, cheese, chicken and BACON inside - BACON! - wrapped in tomato-basil tortillas. Yum!) - Spicy Shrimp & Chicken entree (With pasta in a pepper-cream sauce. This is my go-to self-soother when I'm yearning for the Gorgonzola. Tasty, but not Gorgonzola tasty, sadly.) - Italian Pot Roast entree (This is Hubby's go-to. He loves it. It's a bit meat heavy for me.) - Chicken Marsala entree (A worthy contender for a lighter meal, with guaranteed take home leftovers since it's two good sized chicken breasts.) - Mascarpone Bread Pudding dessert (It's *expletive deleted* extraordinary. I'm convinced it's what Sinatra orders in heaven. Trust me, and Save Room.) Here's what I would avoid ordering at Carino's, for various noted reasons: No: Pizza. Sorry, but each time I've had it, it makes me sad. I haven't had a good one there yet. No: Entree Salads. Why bother? They simply can't be that good. (Note: I haven't tried them.) No: Fettucini. I've ordered it a couple of times because I constantly crave Carbonara, and they don't offer Carbonara. It was no substitute for Carbonara. I am not fond of their alfredo. No: Chicken Parmesan. This is what I typically order when I try a new Italian resto. I only ordered it once here. Not a fan. They used to hold reasonably priced monthly Wine Pairing Dinners here, and we really enjoyed them. They have a nice course-centric wine selection, and they experimented with new menu items via this setting, which made me happy for the most part. But, I don't think they do them any longer because attendance significantly dropped when the economy went in the toity. The trick to enjoying your Carino's experience is all about knowing what to order. I've done the work. I have the hips to prove it. Trust me on this.

I could make better , without much effort at home. Its just not very good. My problem with this place - lackluster flavor. I've gone a few times in case i just hit it on a bad nite. Each time was a bad nite. Its just lame italian food. Better , reasonable options out there. Olive Garden, Macaroni Grille are definiatly better than this place.

Survey says: YUCK Once, a friend raved about the "Italian Nachos" here. So, I ordered them and I don't quite get it. Greasy and no flavor. Sorry. I did like the bread and oil over roasted garlic = STAR I did like the all you can drink Italian sodas. And that you could mix and match the flavors each time. My son made a genius mix: Lemon, Orange and Vanilla. He is brilliant, IMO = STAR Other things to justify the low rating: Soup was like water and entrees had no flavor whatsoever. Johhny Carino's makes Olive Garden look authentic. And, I like Olive Garden. Seemed as though the folks that worked here were only partially commited to customer happiness.

  • Curt N.

Liked the pricing. Food quality is lacking though. All of our food came out just barely warm. They weren't even busy and it took us forever to get out of there. The server only had three tables and it took him 30 minutes to take our money and get change.

  • Tracee W.

They used to have pepperoni bread that was good. I have never had good service there, but since I don't choose the location of business lunches, we keep ending up there. The baked cheese tortolini is great, and the snuggly tables for two look good, but everything is so over priced!

    (2)
  • Paul E.

Average in every way. The food, service, and ambience are all unremarkable. Nothing bad, but nothing attention-getting. Actually, the service is always a little slow and we end up having to ask for something that should just happen.

The empty parking lot scared me and I almost left but man am I glad we stayed! I love this place! Shrimp scampi was delicious, Italian ribs with a balsamic bbq sauce blew me away and the stuffed mushrooms were perfect! They have a peach, wine, champaign, frozen drink... Must try! My server Sonia and her trainee were on top of their game and very friendly. I wish going out to eat was always this perfect. No doubt about it... I'll be back.

  • Mary C.

Wow. I am 100% certain that we will never come here again. The empty parking lot and restaurant should have been a warning sign that we heeded. I think 2 stars is overly generous. I only give them that because their decor was cute and inciting and my hubs liked his meal. My meal on the other hand was blander than an English mans jokes. :) the pasta tasted like dirty dish water and the grilled chicken tasted like eggs. My cute husband was the only redeeming quality of my dining experience. Definitely won't be back. Should have gone to chili's. At least their food has flavor.

Delicious food, friendly staff, good beer, and good prices. The best deal is the 50% off family platters on Mondays with a free family salad and bread. Three adults ate this, plus a appetizer, soda, & 2 beers for $36. We had leftovers for three more lunches the following day. That's $6 per meal per person! And it was fantastic!!

  • Chris S.

Another chain, another review. I had some shrimp scampi. I was not disappointed. So why do I give it a 3? This is one of those places that if you are sure what you are in the mood for you can choose from a lot of different cookie cutter restaurants and still leave not disappointed. Olive Garden, Chili's, Apple Bees... the list goes on. As does the inauthenticity of the food served. Will I go there again? Yes, but only after I have made my rounds to the other chains that remind me of Law and Order, and any CSI show... you know what you are going to get, you will not leave disappointed with the results, but you are never going to be surprised.

Love the Italian Nachos here and the bread. Their Family Night Special makes it affordable for us to take the kids with us.

  • Valerie L.

First and last time ever going to this place the service what's the worst service I've had in a long time. The server could not answer any questions I had about the food, we received our entrees one plate at a time and the side salad came after our food has half gone, the artichoke spinach dip was bland, my pepperoni burger was pink and when I showed it to the server her response was "oh, what do you want me to do". We would have been better off at Olive Garden.

Was not impressed. The service was slow and the food was awful. We will never go back!

Ok, I may be a little bias about Carino's because it has been a part of nearly every good memory I have (graduation dinners, family night outs, school trips, the night I got engaged). That being said, it IS a chain so its quality does vary depending on who is working that night, etc... But every time I have gone to this Carino's I have had excellent service. Their potato soup will always hold a special place in my heart, as well as their tiramisu and wedge salad. Plus, if you're on a budget there is literally NO BETTER way to enjoy your evening out than going on Monday night when all of their family platters (which feed about 4 people) are 1/2 off. That's right, get a GIANT portion of food for around 10-15$. My husband and I go and fill up on their delicious bread (which is approximately 10,000 times better than Olive Garden's) and unlimited soup/salad. Then box the rest and eat like kings for the next 2 days. One day I'll make it up to this poor, helpless chain by ordering a full priced meal ;) Until then, I hope they appreciate how much I really do enjoy visiting! Also, if you're feeling adventurous, you should try their Italian Nachos--they sound odd but are oh so yummy.

Went to Johnny Carino's... again. Time for an update. This place is still great! I'm not sure why people hate on this place so much. Yes, it's a chain. No, it isn't the most authentic Italian food around. Yes, it beats the "other" Italian chains by a mile! The Skilletini is among the best pasta dishes I've had anywhere, for any price. And the portion is HUGE! On this most recent visit, my son got the build-it-yourself pizza and it was very tasty. The crust was thin, but not too thin. The sauce was tangy and just sweet enough. And the meat toppings were excellent. My other son ordered the chicken balsamico and, despite its odd appearance, it was also very good. The salads were ice-cold, crisp and fresh and the dressings are still dynamite (especially the Caeser). Our server was super cool, nice and we never waited or wanted for anything. She even refilled our warm crusty bread without asking or being asked. Nice touch. I've been to Carino's a couple dozen times and have never had anything but a pleasant experience and some hearty comfort food. I always leave happy.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
